Hike the Day Before

I got up really early on the Saturday before (2/25) and drove out to Looking Glass Rock Trail (Brevard, NC) to meet up with my hiking group. Weather was great, near 70, and we had a good hike up to the lookout point. The trail is around 3 miles, out and back is total of 6. We all had a nice meal at “Hawg Wild” afterwards. Since Sassafras Mountain was nearby, I had decided to stay in Brevard overnight and make the short drive in the morning to tag another high point.

Getting There

I drove directly to Woodall Mountain from the FL high point at Britton Hill. This meant driving the length of Alabama, up through Montgomery, Birmingham, all the way out to the northeast corner and into Mississippi. I followed the Google Navigator directions to Woodall Mtn, and they led me directly to the dirt road that heads up to the top.  There was a green sign that read “Woodall Mountain” on the main road as well. I drove all the way to the top, since I didn’t see any parking area or any trails or anything.  The road to the top is gravel and in good condition.

Getting There

Left the hotel early in Enterprise, AL, headed southwest towards FL. I got a little turned around after I stopped for gas, I think I bumped my phone or something and the Google Navigator changed my destination to “Black, AL”. So after I got that straightened out, it was a pleasant drive to Lakewood Park, which is the site of Britton Hill.

Getting There

So I caught an early flight into Atlanta, jumped in my rental car, and drove over to Cheaha Mountain. I had forgotten about the time change going into Alabama so I actually arrived in the area an hour sooner than I thought I would. When I arrived at the park, I drove past the main entrance and went down the hill and around to the lake at the base of the mountain.  Although you can drive to the summit on a good paved road, my inclination is to hike if there’s a feasible option to do so.  There was a $5 charge for entering the lake area parking lot (Cheaha State Park) Although it was completely deserted, I followed the honor system and put my money in the container at the gate.
